Homework for March 21

In the letter, “A Letter on Yik Yak Harassment” written by Jordan Seman towards the students of Middleburg, she uses her own personal experience of Yik Yak to inform her readers that words do hurt and the effects of the harassment on Yik Yak can be powerful. As Seman has this direct perspective of a Yik Yak victim she claims students should think about the words they use and take in account how they effect others.

The next journal, published by the same editorial talks about the use of Yik Yak and the many victims, stating there are more individuals like Jordan Seman, the student who directed a letter to her fellow students stating the emotional trauma of Yik Yak. The writer Nolan Ellsworth says as a news organization, they have a grasp on anonymous freedom of speech, however they forgot the extent it causes until Jordan Seman wrote her journal. Ellsworth also went on to say not only is Middleburg being attacked by Yik Yak , but other colleges are also. However he does not want Middleburg to be the face of this problem so we should be mindful of our words.

The middle bury Campus published an article called “Why not Ban Yik Yak?” written by Isaac Baker and Edward O’Brien. This article talks about freedom of speech and the reasons why the government protect it. The government protects it mainly for whistleblowers and religious minorities. However, how far is far enough to get rid of freedom of speech? This article uses violence examples to demonstrate when freedom of speech goes too far. For example when O’Brien and Baker talked about the two students from the University of Mississippi  who made serious violent threats. If comments like this continues to happen, the article claims the university should step up and do something about it.
